Dr. Chesney is President of Pathology Group of the Midsouth (PGM) in Memphis, and Director of Laboratories at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis. A native of Knoxville, Dr. Chesney was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University Medical School. Following an internship in medicine at Vanderbilt Hospital, he pursued his residency in pathology and fellowship in Dermatopathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was Chief Resident and also taught at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chesney headed the laboratory at the Millington Naval Medical Center from 1974 to 1976 when he joined the pathology staff at BMH where he has practiced for his entire career. Dr. Chesney is a general surgical pathologist with interests in a number of areas including skin pathology.

Dr. Shamim Moinuddin is a graduate of Osmania University Medical College in India. Following internships in Pediatrics at Middlesborough General Hospital, England and Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. James Hospital Tredegar, England she joined BMH. Following her residency at BMH she assumed directorship of cytopathology. Dr. Moinuddin is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with special competence in Cytopathology. Her areas of interest are FNA biopsies, GYN, Bladder, Thyroid and Lung pathology. She has gained extensive experience over the last 20 years and has trained several cytopath fellows and residents. Dr. Moinuddin served for many years as Medical Director, School of Cytotechnology, at the University of Tennessee. She is an active member of BMH’s Medical Staff.

Dr. David Spencer is the gynecology and pulmonary pathologist at Pathology Group of the Midsouth (PGM). A graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1987, Dr. Spencer has an unusual point of view on the surgical-pathologist relationship as he spent 15 months as an OR surgical assistant at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis before and during medical school. Following his residency in Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Dr. Spencer spent a year with Dr. Fred Kraus in St. Louis, Missouri as a fellow in Gynecologic Pathology with a particular interest in placental pathology. Dr. Spencer joined the group in 1992. He also did a mini fellowship in pulmonary pathology with Dr. Jeffery Meyers at Mayo Clinic in 1995. Dr. Spencer is an active member of the BMH Medical Staff, and serves as the Director of Histology.

Dr. Xie is a graduate of Hunan Medical University in China, which was founded by the Yale Association in 1914. After his PhD in physiology and post-doctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Xie did his pathology residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison from 1996-2000. He served as Chief Resident during that period of time. He then completed his cytopathology fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Xie is Board Certified in both Anatomic & Clinic Pathology and Cytopathology. His double board certification serves our clients well in the areas of Cytopathology and General Surgical Pathology. Dr. Xie joined Pathology Group of the Mid-South in April 2004. He served at Duke University as Assistant Professor of Pathology from 2001 to 2004. In addition to cytopathology and general surgical pathology, Dr. Xie’s special interests include ENT, Breast, Urologic, and Gynecologic pathology. Dr. Xie is an active member of BMH Medical Staff, and has served as Director of Cytopathology since 2005.

Dr. Bugg joined Pathology Group of the Midsouth in 1993. Dr. Bugg graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, prior to graduation he worked as a Registered Medical Technologist. Dr. Bugg completed his pathology residency at University of Tennessee/Baptist Memorial Hospital in 1993, serving as Chief Resident. Dr. Bugg is board certified in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology and currently serves as an active Inspector for the College of American Pathology. Dr. Bugg is the Director of Baptist Memorial Hospital – Desoto Laboratories and Director of Rapid Service Clinical Labs at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Dr. Bugg has an interest in ENT (Head & Neck) tumors and pathology of the adrenal glands. He also has special training and an interest in clinical pathology.

Dr. Tom Callihan is the hematopathologist at Pathology Group of the Midsouth in Memphis. A graduate of Kenyon College and George Washington University Medical School, Dr. Callihan did his residency at George Washington University Hospital and his Hematopathology Fellowship with Dr. Costan Berard at the National Cancer Institute from 1977-79. He then became Director of Clinical Laboratories at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Dr. Callihan returned to adult pathology during a 5-year stint with the Duckworth Pathology Group in Memphis, and then joined PGM in 1990. At PGM he is in charge of the Special Hematology Laboratory and interprets bone marrows, lymph nodes, and lymphoid infiltrates of other organs, as well as being a general diagnostic surgical pathologist. He is the author of six book chapters and seventeen articles in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Callihan has an interest in reimbursement as it relates to hematopathology.

Dr. Carolyn Chesney is director of the Coagulation Laboratory at Baptist Memorial Hospital and does diagnostic hematology, blood banking, and clinical consultations in patients with bleeding and clotting disorders. After graduation from Vanderbilt University Medical School Dr. Chesney was an intern and resident in Medicine at Vanderbilt Hospital prior to her Hematology fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology, and has practiced laboratory medicine at Baptist Memorial Hospital since 1980, in addition to her teaching responsibilities at the University of Tennessee as a Professor of Medicine and Pathology.
Dr. Chesney enjoys the reputation of being most experienced coagulationist.

Dr. Groshart graduated from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences 1972. He completed an Internal Medicine residency and six months of Nephrology fellowship at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Groshart also completed a residency in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology at Baptist Memorial Hospital, under the direction of E. Eric Muirhead, M.D. Dr. Groshart is board certified in Internal Medicine and Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. He has special expertise in blood banking, immunohematology, immunology, and coagulation. His areas of special interest include gastrointestinal pathology, pulmonary pathology, immunohematology, and cardiovascular pathology. He is the Medical Director of the Blood Bank and Therapeutic Blood Service for the Baptist Hospital. He brings over twenty five years of experience to the area.

Dr. Hall joined PGM in January 1989 after completing a fellowship in surgical pathology at the University of Tennessee – Memphis. He completed his undergraduate studies at David Lipscomb College (Nashville) and completed his medical degree at the University of Tennessee-Memphis. His residency training was in the Baptist Memorial Hospital/University of Tennessee pathology program. Dr. Hall is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. He has special interests in surgical pathology, clinical chemistry, immunology, clinical microbiology, GYN pathology, breast pathology, and prostate pathology. He has conducted workshops at national meetings of the American Society for Microbiology and at various regional microbiology organizations. He is an active Inspector for the Laboratory Accreditation Program of the College of American Pathologists. He is the current president of the Tennessee Society of Pathologists. Dr. Hall is the Laboratory Director at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Collierville.

Dr. Lyda joined Pathology Group of the Midsouth in 2003. He completed his medical degree and a surgical internship at Oregon health Sciences University. Following his residency at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, Dr. Lyda completed a 2 year Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Dr. Lyda has most recently completed two additional fellowships, Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology, at city of Hope National Medical Center. Dr. Lyda is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology; his areas of interest include gastrointestinal pathology and hematopathology.

Dr. Patton joined Pathology Group of the Midsouth in 2007, after completing fellowships in both GI/Liver pathology 2005-06 and Soft Tissue 2006-07 at Emory University. Prior to the fellowship training, Dr. Patton completed his undergraduate studies at Boston University and his medical degree at the University of Tennessee – Memphis. His residency training was at the Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Patton is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and has special interest and training in bone and soft tissue pathology, as well as gastrointestinal pathology.

Dr. Zhang joined Pathology Group of the Midsouth in 2004. He is Board Certified Anatomic & Clinic Pathology and Board Certified Dermatopathology. Dr. Zhang completed his Dermatopathology fellowship at the prestigious University of Pittsburg Medical Center in 2004. His Surgical Pathology fellowship was conducted at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Zhang will focus his efforts at PGM serving our Dermatology clients and General Surgical cases. Dr. Zhang is the Laboratory Director at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Germantown.
